The Waitakere Ranges

Waitakere Ranges Photos (opens in new window)

Following a re-organisation of my web pages, these photographs have moved and can now be found by clicking this link. The Waitakere Ranges photographs are now part of my gallery on the pbase.com photographic server.

The following description is kept here for historic reasons

The Waitakere Ranges to the west of Auckland, between the city and the Tasman Sea. These photographs show aspects of the scenery either on either side of the road as we travelled through the heart of the Ranges along "Scenic Route 24", having picked up this road at the northern (Swanson) end.

The land is shaped by volcanic action, with a thick covering of vegetation that is quite close to how this part of New Zealand would have looked before human settlement began. It's not quite the same, as significant logging activity about a hundred years ago cost the area many of its ancient Kauri trees.

For the technically minded, these photographs were taken under "challenging" conditions on the afternoon of Wednesday 23 May 2001. The weather alternated between bright sunshine and heavy showers; leading to a dappling effect of direct sunsine and cloud shadows over the countryside. Note the misting caused by several rain showers in the second photograph, which almost completely hides the distant outline of Rangitoto Island (left) and the skyline of Auckland (centre).
