Updates in 1999
15 May 1999
-
A new addition to the Living With Your Rabid Iolausian pages -
a quiz to answer the question:
Are you a Rabid Iolausian?
(The main link is to a plain HTML version, but there is also
an interactive version
which uses JavaScript and cookies.)
6 April 1999
-
This site now exists only on the FreeServe server. Pages to redirect visitors
from the old site will remain only until my previous ISP gets round to reusing
the space.
21 March 1999
-
Computer Reminiscences extended to the end of the
1980s. Since this added considerably to the length of this page, it has now
been split into three main sections covering the early-to-mid
1970s, late 1970s and early 1980s, and the
1980s. Sections covering the 1990s
and the Year 2000 and beyond will be added shortly.
(These last two pages were added as part of the February 2000 update).
-
A general tidy-up of the layout of the Frames pages, and correction of a
couple of typographical errors. (My typing is strictly of the "Why are those
keys so close together?" school.)
19 February 1999
-
A few tweaks to the Level 2 (Frames) and Level 3 (Interactive Table of Contents)
after problems reported with Netscape Navigator. These pages have now been
tested with the following browsers:
-
Internet Explorer 4 with SP1
-
Netscape Navigator 4.04
-
Internet Explorer 2 (which can't view the Level 2 or Level 3 versions
of this site)
-
Lynx. Level 1 looks a little cluttered in places, but it is readable.
As Lynx is a text-only browser, it can't view the Level 2 or Level 3 versions
of this site.
-
I hope to carry out testing with Opera in the near future. Meanwhile,
if you use Opera, and have any comments, please
let me know.
-
Netscape Navigator 2/3 and Internet Explorer 3.0 should be able to
read these pages, but the formatting may not be exactly as I intended. Much
as I'd like to test them with every single browser, browser version, and
browser subversion there is, one of the consequences of installing the latest
version of a browser is that access to older versions of that browser often
becomes impossible. This is especially true if your browser is one that embeds
itself in your operating system (yes, Internet Explorer, I do mean
you!)
7 February 1999
-
Entire site transferred to its new address, with
FreeServe, my new ISP. As my annual
subscription with AOL still has a few months to run, the site will still
be found over there for a while, but probably only containing a set of pages
to redirect the visitor to the new address.
16 January 1999
-
Links to the 1998 Royal International Air Tattoo on the
links and
aviation pages updated to point to the
1999 Royal International
Air Tattoo (it's the same site with an updated title).
-
Interactive Table of Contents (uses Frames,
JavaScript) extended to aid navigation in the Links page.
-
Repairs to the Introduction, or
home page in progress. Most of it is back now, but
some further work remains.
-
A temporary page added, explaining the background to these repairs (subsequently
removed on completion of repairs)
H3>11 January 1999
Well, I certainly didn't expect to be doing another update so soon. This
one involves:
-
Replacement of the Introduction page, with a temporary page. While uploading
the 10 January 1999 update, I (or my uploading software) managed to corrupt
about 30 of the copies I keep on my hard disk of the files used in these
Web pages. Most of them I've managed to retrieve by downloading them back
again. Unfortunately, I'd already uploaded the corrupted version of the
Introduction page and of a couple of images. These files must now be considered
permanent casualties, but I hope to have replacements up and running soon.
That'll teach me to keep my backups up to date!
10 January 1999
Although this isn't the first time I've modified these pages, it is one of
the biggest upgrades I've carried out since I first set up this site nigh
on two years ago. So, as well as the usual typo fixes (ah, Mr Keyboard, how
close your letters!), here's what this upgrade entails:
-
"What's New" page added (a little obvious, that one!)
-
Site now available in three formats.
-
Level 1 is the simplest, and is pitched at older browsers with not a frame
in site, and no JavaScript (well, none that's critical to the functioning
of the page, anyway)
-
Level 2 introduces Frames, and I've used a small amount of JavaScript to
ensure that contents pages and information pages remain reasonably in step.
-
Level 3 makes use of Frames as well, and also makes much greater use of
JavaScript. I particularly like the interactive table of contents, which
presents the layout of this site in the style of a directory tree. By the
way, this isn't boasting as I didn't write the JavaScript for the interactive
table of contents myself - the script is included with Danny Goodman's
JavaScript Bible (pub. IDG Books, ISBN 0-7645-3022-4).
-
Gateway page modified to offer a choice between the three levels of access.

Level 3:

That's about it. It might not look much when set out in summary, but it's
involved rewriting almost every page, and adding quite a few new ones. So,
feel free to have a look around.
