Updates in 2000
11 November 2000
The Links Page checked and broken links fixed or updated.
10-14 October 2000
Another fairly lengthy delay, for much the same reasons as in February 2000.
-
Minor alterations to the Computer Reminiscences pages,
intended to make it clear that these are my personal reminiscences
and not an academic treatise on computer history. When I say I first saw
something at a particular time, I mean that's when I, personally,
first saw it. I don't mean that it wasn't available before
that time. And when I describe something as taking off, I mean that's when
it became widespread and commonplace, not when a small and select number of
dedicated enthusiasts started to use it.
-
Minor amendment to the Interactive Table of Contents
(which uses JavaScript and Cookies).
It worked fine with Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape Navigator 4,
(and still does). With Internet
Explorer 5, the directory tree loaded fine on the first occasion, but if
refreshed (for example, by a user clicking a link) the page containing the
directory tree loaded as a text file, not HTML with JavaScript.
The reason? The first line on the page was a comment. IE 5 seems
to need either an <HTML> tag or a <DOCTYPE> statement as the first
line if it is to display this page correctly. IE 4 and NN 4 don't.
This means that IE 5 probably conforms to
W3C standards better that the
others, but it's still annoying when something that used to work suddenly stops.
One more for the Browser Incompatibilities file!

Future Intentions
These pages have been created with a variety of HTML editors, and further
hacked around with Good Old Notepad. As a result, the underlying HTML
isn't especially readable, so the next update will probably be to
rearrange it in a much prettier format. It won't (or shouldn't)
affect the pages as displayed, but ought to make their maintenance much,
much easier.
8 February 2000
After a fairly lengthy delay brought about by being very, very
busy at work, coupled with the need to impose some sort of order
on the garden before someone brought a team of explorers round
to investigate reports of long-dead species roaming about, I've
finally updated this site!
-
The Computer Reminiscences pages are expanded to include (at last!)
the 1990s and
the Year 2000 and Beyond.
-
Some upgrades to the links and
aviation pages, mostly concerned
with bringing news on and links to the 2000 Royal International
Air Tattoo up to date.
-
On the Living With Your Rabid Iolausian Pages -
a page of Iolausian Links
